FAQ

Should I play Classic or Survival first in Pokebonk?
We recommend Classic on Normal to learn movement, level-up choices and the route. Survival is an endurance mode with its own scaling, scheduled bosses and optional pacts. This is beginner advice, not a measured claim that Classic is always easier.
Do I have to beat Classic to unlock Survival?
The v0.8.55 client offers Survival directly from the menu without a separate Classic-win requirement for that mode. Region access still uses your profile's map unlocks. A locked region does not mean Survival itself is locked. Server-side eligibility was not tested.
When do Mew, Moltres and Mewtwo appear in Survival?
The v0.8.55 schedule puts Mew at 15 minutes, Moltres at 30 and Mewtwo at 45. These are planned milestones: an active boss, Mewtwo encounter or non-playing state can delay spawning. They are not guaranteed appearance times from a playtest.
Does defeating Survival Mewtwo unlock it in the League?
Do not treat the 45-minute fight as a League unlock. The v0.8.55 Survival Mewtwo defeat branch bypasses the capture handoff used by its Classic encounter. Consult the League card for the current challenge and capture requirements; this guide did not test account progression.
Does Survival count as a Classic win for challenges?
No. The v0.8.55 shared challenge predicate counts victory in standard Classic mode and excludes Survival and Lavender Tower. Read each challenge's own conditions; surviving longer is not a substitute for a required Classic victory.

Which mode should I choose?

Want to learn a route? Choose Classic → Normal. Want to see how long a build lasts? Choose Survival. This is our beginner recommendation. Neither mode has a universal completion time or a guaranteed best build.

Your goal Start with Why
Learn movement and level-up choices Classic on Normal A sequence of zones gives the run a destination.
Attempt a challenge that says “win” Classic The shared win check excludes Survival and the Tower.
Push your survival time Survival Endurance, boss milestones and optional pacts drive the run.

Use the first-run guide for the opening steps and the controls reference for movement, aiming and menus.

What actually changes between Classic and Survival?

Rule Classic Survival
Route Zones 1–3, then a sanctuary where the region defines one An endurance run; phases change with elapsed time
Ending The final exit portal completes the route Continues beyond its early milestones; 45 minutes is not a victory finish
Difficulty Normal, Hard and Nightmare, subject to unlocks No separate difficulty selector; the runtime uses its own scaling
Boss progression Region guardians and the final encounter Scheduled milestones every five minutes, subject to delays
Pacts Not part of this Survival milestone system After a milestone defeat, choose a benefit with a drawback, or decline
Records Classic KO records and victory-based time attack Time survived; KOs break leaderboard ties

Classic’s final exit condition depends on the region: stage 4 when it has a sanctuary, or stage 3 without one. Clearing a zone is not automatically a completed run. Read the exit prompt before leaving, especially if an encounter still awaits capture.

For difficulty advice, see which difficulty to choose . This comparison does not assign fixed enemy or Stardust multipliers to Survival, or reuse menu percentages as measured runtime values.

How do I select a mode, and what stays locked?

  1. Open the official game link , choose a League partner and continue to region preparation.
  2. Select Classic or Survival in the Mode section. The main menu also has a direct Survival entry in the checked client.
  3. Select an available region. Both paths check the profile’s region access; changing mode does not open a locked map.
  4. In Classic, choose an available difficulty. The menu says winning the previous difficulty in that region opens the next one. In Survival, difficulty selection is replaced by its records and rules panel.

The client does not put a separate “beat Classic first” gate on the Survival mode button. This is a client-code finding, not a test of every account or server restriction. Use the locked region’s own explanation for its prerequisites.

Historical v0.7.2 region preparation screen with Survival selected beside Classic
Historical v0.7.2 preparation screen from the repository’s earlier Guest research. It illustrates the Mode selector, not current season access, live records or v0.8.55 gameplay. The milestone table below was checked separately in the current client.

What are the Survival boss milestones?

The first nine scheduled milestones are below. Guardian species are chosen from the region’s candidate pools; the old screenshot does not establish a fixed guardian for every run.

Planned run time Encounter What to expect
5 and 10 minutes Regional guardian Early milestone fights
15 minutes Mew Legendary milestone
20 and 25 minutes Regional guardian Later regional candidates
30 minutes Moltres Legendary milestone
35 and 40 minutes Regional guardian Later regional candidates
45 minutes Mewtwo Special encounter; Endless Night also begins at this time

Other clock changes matter even between bosses:

  • 12 minutes: phase 2 begins; the client announces evolved Pokémon joining the horde.
  • 24 minutes: phase 3 begins; the announcement describes final forms hunting you.
  • 30 minutes: Deep Wounds begins, reducing healing over time.
  • 45 minutes: Endless Night begins and adds further enemy scaling. Defeating its scheduled Mewtwo does not end the run as a Classic victory.

After defeating a milestone, read both sides of each offered pact. The client lets you decline; accepting a drawback is a choice, not a requirement to continue. Plan your level-up choices around the moves you actually have.

Can Survival replace Classic progression?

A Survival milestone is not a Classic victory. The shared challenge logic explicitly excludes Survival and the Tower from its Classic-win check. This does not mean every challenge excludes Survival: follow each challenge’s own conditions.

The special Survival Mewtwo defeat path also skips the capture handoff used in its Classic encounter. Do not assume reaching or defeating the 45-minute milestone adds Mewtwo to your League. This page does not attempt to document its complete unlock chain or claim an account unlock was tested.

There is also a wording mismatch worth knowing: the preparation description says Survival has “no zones or portals,” but v0.8.55 implements migration portals. Its timer starts at 11 minutes and waits for an eligible playing state with no active boss or Mewtwo fight. Migration rebuilds the terrain within the selected region; it is not the Classic route’s next-zone or victory portal.

What was verified, and what remains untested?

Checked on 2026-10-26: official version metadata , the game client , shared definitions and English UI dictionary . These establish menu labels, mode branching, phase thresholds, the scheduled milestone sequence and the Classic-win predicate for this build.

Historical observation: the preparation image is from v0.7.2 research. Untested here: full runs, actual boss arrival times, server-side account progression, reward totals, device performance and co-op behavior. This guide makes no measured farming-efficiency or fixed-duration claim. If the live version differs, check its current menu before relying on this snapshot.
